Organic Baby Quilt

This is my first time using organic cotton fabric and I loved it!

And how could you not love it when you are looking at this wonderful design by Teagan White for Birch Fabrics.  Her artwork is really sweet and she has her own website where you can buy prints and such too.  I really like her subdued color palate and kind of old fashioned looking themes.

This quilt went together really quickly because I used a whole piece of the hexagon print for the top.  Then I free-motion quilted it in a loopy design that makes me think of how the fireflies on the back might be zipping around.

I decided to wash this one to see how the organic fabric shrinks up.  Well, as you can see it puckers up just beautifully.  In fact, I was pleasantly surprised at how soft and supple this quilt came out of the dryer.

The binding is the same fabric as the back and like usual machine stitched on.

I had a bit of extra fabric so I went ahead and did up a set of burp cloths too.  Both the quilt and the burp cloth set are available in my etsy shop.

They look cute all bundled up.

As much as I like this organic fabric, and I mostly bought it because I loved the print itself,  I don't know if the premium you pay is worth it.  It cost almost $25 more to make this quilt. What do you guys think?  Is organic fabric worth the extra money?

Pretty in Pink Baby Girl Quilt

I am pretty sure that pink baby girl quilts are my favorite.  At least this one is for now.

These Tanya Whelan Slipper Roses fabrics are so beautiful.  When I was piecing them together I really enjoyed every minute.

This was a baby quilt custom ordered from my etsy shop.  It finished up at approximately 36" square with 3" patchwork pieces.

The binding is the same fabric as the backing - the pink dottie slipper roses.

I quilted it in my usual favorite straight diagonal lines crisscrossing the squares.

Now onto bathroom painting:).

Moving Right Along

Some updates on all my projects - house and quilts - today.

Here's my most recent quilt project.

This is a custom order for a pink baby girl quilt.  We are using Tanya Whelan's Ruby Slipper Roses.  I cut patchwork squares 3.5 inches and am doing just a random layout.  The fabrics are so pretty they don't need a fancy pattern to shine.

As you can see I just finished the top and hopefully I will get started basting and quilting it today.

In other parts of the house we are making some good progress on the powder room project.

The majority of the wallpaper is off the walls.  I just have a few spots up high to get done.  Of course I had to buy a new ladder to do that.  The 6 foot ladder just wasn't tall enough in this house so we have invested in a nice 8 foot ladder.

That funny square patch under the light is from where I removed the old mirror.  It was stuck to the wall with adhesive and I was able to get it off in one piece - thank goodness.

More exciting though is the new floor...

Doesn't it look swell!!!  The tile guys got it done in 2 days and then we let it cure for a couple of more just to make sure it was all good before I started putting ladders and such on it.  So I have a little bit of prep work to do and then I'm on to painting.  You can see where I started from in this post.

I still have to find a new faucet and light fixture too.  All the ones I like are kinda pricey so I haven't brought myself to spending the money yet.  My plan is to wait until everything else is done and then my husband is all like "...just get what you want and get this bathroom done".  Then I won't feel guilty about my expensive faucet taste:).

In the bummer category we ended up buying not 1 but 2 new furnaces.

The one that serviced the 2nd floor and the attic broke down and needed an expensive part, but since it was 20 years old we just decided to invest in a whole new furnace.  And since the HVAC guy was having a sale plus a rebate from our gas company we decided to replace the one for the downstairs too.  I would rather have spent the money on fun stuff (like pretty faucets) but I really like knowing we have brand new furnaces for next winter.

By the way, I asked our HVAC guy about discount for paying in cash and he gave us 10% off to pay in cash (as in cash cash - dollar bill cash) versus charging us 3% to pay with a credit card or no surcharge for using a personal check.  If you're in the market for a big piece of equipment you might want to ask your dealer if they will give a cash discount - it can save you a lot of money.

We've also been doing a lot of work in the yard so I think I'll save that for a separate post later this week.  The mulch is being spread as I type so I'll try to get some pretty pictures this afternoon.

Cowboy Patchwork Quilt

Howdy Partner!!!

I just finished this cute cowboy quilt this week.  It was started before we moved back in February but got pushed to the back of the line for a while.

My sister needed a gift for a friend in Texas and I had previously purchased some of this Riley Blake October Afternoon Sasparilla fabric so we thought it would be perfect.

I fussy cut the main cowboy fabric and then did 2.5 inch squares for the rest of the patchwork.  I am finding that I really like the look of a 2.5 inch patchwork square the best although it does take a lot more time to cut and sew all those small squares even with chain piecing and strip sewing.

A few of the scenes featured cowgirls too so I think you could get away with using this for a boy or a girl.

For the back and the binding we picked the gray bandana print.

And then of course I quilted it up in diagonal lines crisscrossing each patchwork square.

Now all it needs is a ribbon and a tag and off it will go to it's new owner.
