From Barely Used to Bearing Books...

I'm really excited to share this transformation with you.  This is the first room in the new house that I am really feeling is reflecting our taste.  The change in here is pretty dramatic from how the old homeowner was using this room.  The room is at the front of the house directly to the right of the front door.  Typically, people use these rooms as a formal living room, but with a family room and a finished basement rec room we definitely didn't need another room with a couch and tv.

Here are some pictures I took during our home inspection.

That's my 4 year old bored out of his mind.  Can you hear him whining "are we done yet"?
As you can see it was a very nice typical formal living room space.  I'm guessing that no one ever used it.

In our old house we had done our own built-in bookcases for our books and when we got to this house we realized that we suddenly had no where to put all our books.  We needed a quick solution or else we had 20+ boxes that were going to be in storage for a while.

About that time I read a post on Between Naps on the Porch about her new bookcases that she bought from Ikea.  They looked great and the price point was perfect.  Plus it would save us the time of making our own.  So we headed to Ikea to check out the Billy bookcase system.  Of course, they were out of stock but it was okay because we got to see them in person and decide that they were what we wanted.  I ended up ordering them online and paying a small fee to have them delivered right to our house which was well worth the money because we needed 23 boxes.

So here is the room with it's new room!

This is what you see straight from the doorway as you enter the room.

One of the things we really liked about the Billy system was that it came with a kit that helped you get around the corner.

This picture shows the wall across from the windows.  We went from floor to ceiling with our bookcases.

This is our desk.  We decided not to put bookcases on this wall because we felt the desk would block a lot of the bookcase and it would be a waste.

These windows face the street.  I hung my book page wreath above our piano which is centered between the two windows.

I can't believe the difference between the before and after.  I just love sitting at the desk surrounded by all our books when the sunlight pours in mid-afternoon.  It makes a cozy spot for my son to play while I am blogging away.

In my next post I'll share some of the nitty gritty details about the bookcases and where I found the curtains and other such things.

Here's where I'm at this week...

  1. Alissa, they look awesome! I love that you took them around the corner and used the corner piece. Love that! It really makes them look so custom. They do transform a room! I love how they look going all the way to the ceiling. Thanks for sharing you home library and the Billy bookcases. I have such a love for books and home libraries, so this was a real treat!

  2. I love how the wall of shelves looks! I've been wanting to turn my computer room into a "library" by doing this - it looks wonderful!

  3. Alissa, just saw your post on Wow Us Wednesdays. What a great use of space!! I love this room! Very pretty! I am a newbie to blogging and your newest follower. I hope you will follow me, too! Be blessed!

  4. I'm over from WOW...these look fabulous in your room.

  5. What amazing storage! Looks great

  6. Love that you decided to use this space in a way that suits your lifestyle and needs rather than what a floor plan or builder says the space should be. We've also flipped a lot of rooms / functions in our downstairs and it makes us much happier than when we had the standard room arrangement. The Billy bookcase system works great in your room for your storage needs, and love the book or sheet music wreath above the piano.

  7. Those Billy bookcases are the bomb! Love that you repurposed the room to meet your needs. :) Kudos and enjoy!
