We're Going to Disney!!
We're going to Disney World! We just booked our trip via their website, and we couldn't be more excited. We have not told the kids yet - I want to have one of those Disney commercial moments. You know the ones where the parents do something clever to tell the kids (like make a pizza in shape of mickey ears) and the kids all jump up and down because they're so happy. That's what I want. That's one of the reasons why you have kids. To have those moments like Christmas morning. So if anyone has any great ideas please pass them my way.
We have booked a week in mid-October at the Beach Club Resort. There are 5 of us so we had a few less choices in terms of hotel rooms. I know it may be cheaper to stay off property, but this is my vacation too, and I am all about convenience when we are on vacation. Staying at a Disney hotel eliminates a rental car and gives us access to the extra hours and other benefits. More importantly, when I'm on vacation I don't want to cook at all. Normally, I eat 2 out of 3 meals standing up, and I really want someone else to wait on my family for a change. Also, when eating out everyone can get what they want, and I don't have to hear about how this one doesn't like the noodles and that one doesn't like the vegetable and why didn't I make rolls too.
I did a lot of research about the different resort options at Disney and the Beach Club seemed to meet our needs the best. It allows for a family of 5 to stay in same room together - this I found is not the easiest thing to come by at Disney. They only have a few resorts that offer this option, and I wasn't thrilled with the other resorts. Some resorts will allow you to book 2 rooms, but they won't guarantee that the rooms are adjoining which is a must for us.
The other reasons we picked the Beach Club was because it has an incredible pool complex and some great restaurants right at the resort. Two of my husband's colleagues also highly recommended the resort. Apparently the pool is almost like a water park on its own which saves us from spending a day at one of the water parks (which by the way cost extra) and I don't exactly love parading around a whole park in my bathing suit. Having a great pool at our hotel will allow us to have some relaxing down time in the afternoons after busy park mornings.
I have to say that the Disney website is incredible and makes booking a vacation super easy. They have thought of everything - room reservations, meal reservations, park tickets, show tickets, mom's question panel, etc. You can even plan out your days at the parks down to your route between attractions and your meals on handy customized printable maps. So far we have booked our resort and airline tickets. We have to wait until 6 months out to do the meal reservations. The Beach Club Resort has a restaurant that does a character breakfast, which is where the kids get to meet and take pictures with some of the popular characters, so we will be signing up for that.
Most importantly, our resort has a kids club that babysits your kids so parents can have an evening out. It is pricey ($11.50 per hour per kid), but I think for our sanity we will use it at least one night so we can have a quiet meal to ourselves.
My youngest, who is 4, is the world's biggest Toy Story fan. He can act out any scene from any of the 3 movies. He has collected all the guys and was Buzz Lightyear for Halloween last year. I can't wait for him to see the Toy Story attractions. My older two, 7 and 8, have been bugging us for a Disney trip for the last year or so - you know everyone has been to Disney but them! I think all of them will get a kick out of flying for the first time too.
I have subscribed to some of the Disney tip newsletters but I would love to hear from you all about your experiences. What should we avoid, what is a must do, what do we need to bring, what do we need to leave home? Tell me anything you think we need to know about Disney.

P.S. Disney did not compensate me for this post but wouldn't it be cool if they did. Although more likely they will sue me since I took all the photos from their website:)
